Liverpool star dropped by Nike

Liverpool defender Mamadou Sakho has been dropped by sports giant Nike as a result of his failed drugs test.

The manufacturer confirmed: “We have suspended our relationship with Sakho while the investigation continues. We will continue to monitor the situation.”

The Frenchman hasn’t represented Liverpool since the Merseyside Derby mid April, having taken a fat burner on the banned list.

Why the 26-year-old didn’t check whether the substance was legal is baffling, and Sakho now faces a lengthy ban from playing. UEFA currently have suspended him for 30 days until they announce his actual full-time ban.

Sakho’s going to miss the Europa League Final and the Euros, which is a devastating blow to the player who would have started for Liverpool in Basel and France in his home nation’s international tournament.

Now, Nike have rubbed salt in the wound.

Sakho was enjoying an excellent season under Klopp, but his career has very much hit a stonewall following his grave error of judgement.

It remains to be seen how long he’ll remain on the sidelines and whether he’ll be able to reforge his standing as a key Liverpool player in the long-term.
