Jurgen Klopp was visibly upset in his post-match interview after our Europa League final loss against Sevilla.
He refused to lay blame for the defeat on Sevilla’s confidence-shattering goal just 20 seconds after the restart, but instead insisted that our performance was not good enough over the 90 minutes.
Perhaps his most telling comment, however, was when he was asked about the absence of Champions League (and European) football next season.
Here’s what he said:
“To be honest, what I think about not being in the Champions League, is that we have to use the time. It is not about the size of the squad, it is about using the time in training to get better. I promise everybody we will use it and come back stronger. It was 50-60% of our usual quality and we have to accept that. We will come back.
“I don’t expect the belief, they need to have it. We could not reach our level. It is now my job to not let the players feel the pressure too much.
“We saw it in the game after they scored the first goal. It changed. A lot of people may have thought we could change it again. The goals were too easy.
“In this moment, I am responsible for this performance. There is no criticism and I have spoken to my players. Nobody in the stadium believed, I thought we could change it but it was not enough.”
