Skrtel’s told Klopp he wants to leave Liverpool; likely destination named [Telegraph]

Martin Skrtel‘s eight year Liverpool tenure is coming to its end, much to the relief of many supporters after another defensively torrid season.

The Slovakian’s been a loyal servant, but his performances have not warranted that of a starting Liverpool centre-half.

The Telegraph say Skrtel has told Jurgen Klopp he wants to leave Liverpool this summer, and the 31-year-old’s agent Mithat Halis said it looks like the defender will move to Turkish champions Besiktas.

“Skrtel is considering a move to Turkey and he is open to the option of playing here,” he said.

“Fenerbahce made an offer last season, Besiktas want Skrtel and make no secret of this. Turkish sides have been trying to sign him for five seasons but this summer he could make the move.”

With Joel Matip arriving from Schalke on a Bosman and Joe Gomez returning from his lengthy injury lay-off, Skrtel is surplus to Anfield requirements.

At his best, Skrtel would be an aerial threat and set our tempo by defending on the front-foot – but his inability to communicate properly with the rest of his back four and penchant for poor decisions saw him infuriate fans.

He should be remembered for his season in 2013/14, where he excelled – scoring seven Premier League goals and playing a big role in our title pursuit.
