Jonas Hector update: Liverpool not in the running for Germany left-back

Posted by

Liverpool fans who had their hearts set on us signing Jonas Hector will be disappointed, as the Echo have confirmed that reports we had agreed a £12m fee for the left-back were bogus.

They suggest he’s not actually on our radar, and won’t be heading to Merseyside any time soon.

The Cologne defender had been earmarked as a potential summer target, considering his excellent Bundesliga campaign and the fact he’s now established himself as Germany’s starting left-back – but it appears we’ll be focussing our attentions elsewhere.

Hector is 26, approaching his prime, and for us – seemed like a perfect potential upgrade on the defensively shoddy Alberto Moreno.

Instead, Jurgen Klopp will turn his attentions elsewhere. The latest is that Leicester City’s teenage defender Ben Chilwell remains the most likely arrival, with the Daily Star confident a deal will be wrapped up sooner rather than later.

Chilwell is talented, but his signing would indicate Klopp wants to stick with Moreno as his first choice for the beginning of the season, using Chilwell as an exciting backup option.

This would be a big risk, considering Moreno’s mistakes cost us in both our lost finals during the 2015/16 campaign.
