Sturridge declares a former Reds idol was the inspiration behind cup final goal

Daniel Sturridge has been taking some time out of England duty to reflect back on his 2015/16 season.

Inevitably, he was asked about our cup final loss to Sevilla in the Europa League. Rather than reel off the usual platitudes and sound bytes, he instead discussed the technique he used to score his goal.

“The goal in the Europa final was instinctive,” he said (via Echo).

“When I got the ball, I wasn’t intending to go inside but the defender kept backing off and it gave me the space to shoot. So if he’s going to give me space I’m going to take the opportunity.”

He then claimed that German maestro Didi Hamann was the inspiration behind it.

“I’ve played with players I’ve learnt that from — also Didi Hamann was very big with the outside of his foot.

“There was Deco, was who was very good with the outside of his foot. Paul Merson was top drawer with the outside of his foot too.

“So there are a lot of people who can you see doing it and try to pick things up. I’m always learning and trying to improve.”

Sturridge is probably going to have to settle for a place on the bench when England play their EURO 2016 opener against Russia on Saturday night.
