Kolo Toure to be released by Liverpool; Champions League club want his services

It’s perhaps fitting that Kolo Toure‘s final game for Liverpool was a Europa League Final in which he was comfortably our best player.

The veteran Ivorian, whose contract is all but up, will be named on the list of players released by clubs today, the Echo confirm.

Toure arrived at Anfield on a Bosman from rivals Manchester City in 2013, and regardless of performance, he’s established himself as a real fan favourite. The double Premier League winning defender actually enjoyed his best on-pitch campaign this one just gone, and despite being offered a coaching job to stay on, Toure feels he still has something to offer on the field – with Ligue 1 outfit Monaco expressing an interest.

They’re playing Champions League football next season, and we wouldn’t begrudge Kolo a few years sunning himself in the principality!

Toure had virtually no pace when we signed him, but his experience and ability to position himself smartly has made him a valuable asset. His brilliant attitude has endeared him to fans, and he’ll always be welcomed back to Anfield with open arms.

With Joe Gomez returning from injury and the signing of Joel Matip, Toure’s chances of minutes would’ve been restricted next term, and we understand the club’s decision – although find it difficult to take nonetheless.
