Dirk Kuyt scammed by butler for €200k in fake diamond trick

This is some story, emerging from the Telegraaf in Dirk Kuyt’s native Holland today…

It turns out our former attacker, who starred for Liverpool between 2006 and 2012, was tricked by a butler to pay €200k for diamonds – which the butler switched for fakes before selling and keeping the profit.

Marcel J, a butler at the Grand Hotel Huis ter Duin in Noordwijk, is accused of scamming wealthy guests into giving them diamonds for him to clean, before he swapped them with fakes and kept the genuine ones. He was discovered by an eagle eyed jeweller, and it turns out Kuyt has been caught up in his swindle.

The butler convinced Kuyt to buy the jewels, but when the 35-year-old got cold feet and asked for his €200k back, Marcel J claimed the money had already been spent. The gems our ex-striker received were not authentic, and he’s taken up legal proceedings as a result.

Poor ol’ Dirk! To be fair, millionaire footballers being scammed is not nearly as sad as regular members of the public whose lives can be totally ruined by fraudsters; but we can imagine the incident has left a sour taste in Kuyt’s mouth regardless.

Kuyt currently plies his trade for Feyenoord, for whom he scored a mightily impressive 23 goals in all competitions last term.
