Mignolet to start season as Liverpool’s No.1, Karius must wait for chance

New signing Loris Karius is many people’s choice for No.1 next season, but it seems as though Simon Mingolet will keep his starting spot at the start of the campaign; at least in the short term. Karius is apparently set to link up with the German Olympic squad this summer, and so won’t be ready to start the season with his new Liverpool teammates, as reported by the Echo.

Mignolet has enjoyed mixed success since his switch to Liverpool from Sunderland, putting in some truly dreadful performances but also showing what he’s capable of when he’s at his best. Karius’ arrival means he’ll finally have some real competition though, and it seems likely that the German international may eventually take his starting spot.

It looks like Mignolet will have a little bit more time to prove to Jurgen Klopp that he’s worthy of a starting spot in his team though, with the Belgian set to at least have a few games left before he’s displaced.

Karius won’t have a full pre-season to learn to play with his new teammates, which always takes a little time – especially for a goalkeeper who needs to learn to communicate with and marshal his defenders.

It would be hugely surprising to see Mignolet keep his place for the whole of next season, but we may see a little more rotation than we’ve been used to over the last few seasons.
