Intriguing new friendly added to Liverpool’s summer schedule

Liverpool today announced the club will play a friendly with German outfit Mainz on August 7th.

We’ll head to Germany one day after our blockbuster friendly with Barcelona at Wembley August 6th, meaning we’re likely to deploy a much changed XI.

Mainz are Jurgen Klopp’s former team, both as player and manager, and sold us Loris Karius earlier in the summer as well. Whether this friendly was part of the deal that brought the goalkeeper to Anfield is unclear.

The friendly is the ninth already arranged for the summer, which includes a tour of America and marquee clashes against Chelsea, AC Milan and Roma in the International Champions Cup. Our friendlies will be interesting as they’ll give us a first chance to check out the likes of Marko Grujic, Loris Karius and Joel Matip – all of whom should be available throughout as they’re not playing at the Euros or Copa America.

Hopefully by August there’ll be a number of exciting new players to join those three, as well as a bunch of talented youngsters we can take a real look at.

Remember, Joe Gomez’s performances last summer earned him a starting spot in the initial Premier League side.
