AC Milan are thought to have moved ahead of Liverpool in the race to sign Real Madrid’s out of favour midfielder, Mateo Kovacic.

According to Italian website calciomercato.com, Milan representatives met Madrid officials last week to discuss a deal. The 22-year-old was linked with us recently, but that rumour now seems to be fading.

The report claims that transfer business is tough to negotiate at AC Milan at the moment given the ongoing takeover talks with a Chinese consortium, but they are still keen to force the deal over the line.

Madrid only signed the player from Inter Milan last season, but the player has struggled to make an impact at the Bernabeu.

Madrid would prefer to find the player a permanent home, but Milan want the player on loan with a view to a permanent move.

The outcome of the negotiations remains to be seen.
