Liverpool boost: Talks held with potential replacement for £10m target

Posted by

Ben Chilwell has been an apparent target of ours for a while now, with reports suggesting we could be set to make a £10m move for the Leicester City left-back (via the Daily Mail). We look to have received a boost in the hunt for his signature too, with the Foxes in talks with Norwich City over a move for his potential replacement, Robbie Brady, as reported by The Guardian.

Brady is coming off the back of an impressive Euro 2016 performance with Ireland, having scored from the spot in their last game against France. The versatile star plays in midfield more often than not for Ireland, but recently he’s been playing left-back or left-wing-back for both club and country. If Leicester complete the signing of Brady then there’s unlikely to be any room for Chilwell, so rather than spend another season out on loan he may well make a move to Anfield.

Although Chilwell is regarded very highly with both Leicester and Huddersfield – where he spent last season on loan – there are plenty of Liverpool fans who aren’t convinced. We’re yet to really see him play all that much, and he’s unquestionably a bit of an unproven entity in the Premier League. Many fans would rather see a more established left-back arrive at the club, especially when we’ve been linked with a move for the likes of Jonas Hector – a German international already performing at the top level (via the Echo).

In fact, many fans are even suggesting we should be making a move for Brady; arguing that if he’s good enough for the Premier League Champions, why isn’t he good enough for us?

While Brady is a solid performer, he arguably isn’t of the standard required to play for Liverpool. That’s not to say that Chilwell is necessarily a step up, but the teenager may well have more potential. We could possibly do better than both men given the left-backs that look available this summer – Ricardo Rodriguez anyone? (via the Mirror) – so are we aiming too low?
