Man United may cost Liverpool a long-term transfer target

Borussia Dortmund’s Henrikh Mkhitaryan looks on the verge of making a switch to Manchester United, and that has apparently opened the door for Mario Gotze to make a return to the Bundesliga club, according to ESPN.

We’ve long been linked with a move for the German international (via the Express), even if the rumours have dried up a little recently. The player himself seems like he may not be keen on a move to Liverpool, so we’ve consequently been linked with a host of other players instead.

The Bayern Munich man may now be set to return to Jurgen Klopp’s old club rather than linking back up with the manager himself, which a number of fans may be somewhat disappointed with.

Based on Gotze’s performances at the Euro 2016 Championships we’re really not missing out on much, as he’s looked distinctly average when given the chance. After pursuing the player for so long it may frustrate some that he might have chosen to move elsewhere though, especially if Manchester United’s transfer business has facilitated the move.

Gotze was unquestionably a talented and promising youngster, but he really hasn’t realised the massive potential he showed. Klopp clearly has plenty of other transfer targets lined up, and we certainly trust the German manager’s vision.
