Liverpool officially out of Gotze race, Klopp unlikely to buy another attacker

The dream is over; Liverpool are no longer in the race to sign Mario Gotze.

Mountains of speculation had linked the Bayern Munich winger with a potential reunion with Jurgen Klopp at Anfield – the pair of course worked brilliantly together at Borussia Dortmund.

But James Pearce of the Echo has confirmed that we are no longer exploring the possibility of signing the World Cup winner following our £30m capture of Sadio Mane from Southampton.

Pearce understands that we made contact with Gotze’s representatives prior to the start of Euro 2016, but dismissed reports that the 24-year-old ever visited our Melwood training base.

With Mane on board, Klopp is said to be very happy with his options for the positions behind the striker – Philippe Coutinho, Roberto Firmino, Adam Lallana, Sheyi Ojo and Lazar Markovic.

And Pearce adds that our manager also thinks he has enough firepower already in his forward ranks – Daniel Sturridge, Divock Origi and Danny Ings – that Gotze is no longer a necessity.

So it sounds as though we won’t be buying another attacker during this summer window.

As for Gotze, the Daily Mail report that he’s the subject of a tug-of-war between Dortmund and Tottenham Hotspur. We hope he goes back home – seeing him at Spurs would be too painful.
