Phil Thompson names his two ideal Liverpool summer signings (doesn’t hold back…)

Liverpool’s former skipper and assistant manager Phil Thompson has ambitiously named two players he’d ideally like us to sign this summer, the Echo reports.

Ignoring our actual reported targets like Piotr Zielinski, Mahmoud Dahoud or Ben Chilwell, Thompson’s selected two of Europe’s most renowned players.

Both have enormous reputations and world pedigree, and one actually used to play for Liverpool!

“If Christian Benteke and Mario Balotelli go then I’d still like to see another striker come in,” Thompson began…

“I’ve been saying for a few years that I’d like to see Liverpool try and tempt Gonzalo Higuain away from Napoli.

“Another one, after Pep Guardiola left Bayern, would be to bring Xabi Alonso back to do a Gary Mcallister and spend his final few years at Liverpool. I think it would help Emre Can and Jordan Henderson understand the role and I still think he’s one of the best passes around. I know he loved every minute of his time with Liverpool.

“I’d also like to see Joe Allen stay and I’ve been saying that for a long time. Has was one of our most consistent performers after Christmas and deserves a new deal and more playing time.”

Would we take Higuain and Alonso? Too right we would, but perhaps for the glamour and romance than anything else.

The former is undeniably one of the best strikers in world football, but the forward line is not, in our opinion, an area we need to strengthen – even if Benteke does leave. Without the Belgian, we still have Daniel Sturridge, Danny Ings, Divock Origi and Roberto Firmino competing for one spot.

Alonso would boost our midfield when we’re on the ball, as he dictates tempo from deep and as Thompson states, is one of the best passers around – but off the ball he’d struggle to work ferociously to win it back – which Jurgen Klopp demands from his central players.

The manager is also targeting younger players in an attempt to build and develop a team for the coming years, although actually, we think it probably needs an injection of experience – as our Europa League Final capitulation proved.

If you could only sign two more players this summer, Reds; who’d you take…?
