Lucas Leiva is many things, but a goal-scorer is not one of them. In fact, these days it’s hard to believe that he used to play in attacking midfield for his old side Gremio in Brazil.

However, the Brazilian bagged a rare goal last night in our 5-0 demolition of League One’s Fleetwood Town in a friendly – much to his and the manager’s delight. He even wore the captain’s armband in the second half, making it a wonderful evening for the 29-year-old.

He’s opened up about the goal in an interview with the official site today, calling it a “good feeling”

“It’s good to score after quite a while,” he said. “It was a good feeling, I’ve been feeling good and training really hard and hopefully I will have a good season ahead of me.

“I think it was a good test. Of course, we are still in an early stage of the pre-season, our second game, and I think it was a good performance overall but of course we can improve in a lot of aspects.

“We’ve been training really hard the last couple of weeks so we just tried to do our best and improve our fitness, which is the main thing, and of course start to do the things we are going to do at the start of the season.”
