Klavan ‘close’ to completing £4.2m Liverpool switch

Augsburg captain Ragnar Klavan is apparently “close” to becoming a Liverpool player, with the Estonian centre-back on the verge of completing a £4.2m move to Anfield, according to Sky Sports.

As the Echo suggests, we are badly in need of centre-back cover due to the injuries suffered by Mamadou Sakho and Joe Gomez. Joel Matip hobbling off against Wigan showed exactly how close we are to a crisis, and a centre-back signing could prove hugely important for our season.

The 30-year-old Augsburg defender obviously isn’t a big name or a marquee signing, but he could come in and provide the cover we need until other players return. After all, it’s better to have something and not need it rather than to not have it and end up needing it.

The left-footer would prove a low risk signing and would be a great bit of insurance, so there seem to be very few downsides to this deal. He’s experienced, powerful, and an established leader, so could certainly bring something to the side. The Echo claim his wages won’t be huge and he’ll be happy with a bit-part at the club, on top of which he’s able to slot in at left-back in a pinch.

This is not a signing that is going to get everyone excited, but it’s fantastic to see Jurgen Klopp identifying an issue as soon as it arises and going straight out to deal with it. Sky Sports suggest the deal could be done in time for him to join us for the tour of America.
