Wijnaldum update: Misses flight to Newcastle, LFC want move done by Thursday

Georginio Wijnaldum didn’t head back to Newcastle following his side’s 6-0 friendly win over Irish side Bohemians yesterday, but boarded a plane to his native Holland instead – with a report in the Shields Gazzete stating that we want a deal done in the next 48 hours.

Newcastle allowed the Dutchman to do so, with manager Rafa Benitez admitting that he’ll likely sell some key players this summer when asked about the 25-year-old.

“We maybe have to sell some players if we have the right offers, but that’s always normal,” the Spaniard said.

The report says Newcastle are looking for roughly £25m for Wijnaldum, but would consider a deal that includes a Liverpool player – with Jon Flanagan and Lucas prospective Toon targets.

Lucas was signed by Benitez for Liverpool of course, but would unlikely want to drop down to the Championship, while Flanagan recently extended his contract (but isn’t a first-team regular).

The reason the club want a deal tied up imminently is so Wijnaldum can join our summer tour of America, which leaves on Thursday following the Huddersfield friendly.

Jurgen Klopp wants as many of his first-team squad with him for the duration of the tour as possible, and would also hope to have the Ragnar Klavan deal tied up by then as well – with the Estonian undergoing a medical today (via Sky Sports).
