Liverpool lost 1-0 to Bundesliga 2 outfit FC Erzgebirge in a friendly in Germany on Wednesday night.

The game was notable for the return of promising young winger Harry Wilson; the senior Welsh international has been missing for the last 5 months with a broken toe.

The result is in no way an embarrassment –  FC Erzgebirge won the German third tier last season and fielded a nearly full-strength side.

Jack Dunn forced two great saves from their keeper and Toni Gomes curled a great effort just wide of the post.

The only goal of the game arrived just before the break after a good move from a quickly-taken throw-in.

Michael Beale said the game was “an outstanding test against a very good opponent”.

“We started the game with nine players aged 19 or below and therefore was giving away a huge amount in terms of experience and strength,” he said.

“This is only our second game of pre-season and therefore it’s important now to look for perfection in the first moments and we know that we are building for a long season of development.”

We drew our first game – also in Germany – 1-1 against Sonnenhof Großaspasch.

The youth sides now play Rhyl, Celtic, Morecambe, and MK Dons over the next 10 days as their step up their preparations ahead of the start of the new season.
