Premier League club set to offer huge sum for Liverpool striker

Crystal Palace will return with an improved bid for Christian Benteke in an attempt to seal a bumper deal for our Belgian striker, writes Dominic King in the Daily Mail.

They’ve already offered around £30m, but despite the fact Benteke indicated he wanted to stay at Liverpool, the Eagles will return with another bid claims King.

The forward, who cost us £32m last summer from Aston Villa, is down Jurgen Klopp’s pecking order, and is unlikely to feature much if he does choose to stay. Daniel Sturridge, Divock Origi and Danny Ings will all be preferred due to their ability to run, press and drift wide – while Roberto Firmino was even used ahead of the 26-year-old when both were fit last term.

Considering Klopp usually deploys just one forward, it would make sense for Benteke to leave and join a club whose tactics suit his direct traits.

The manager encouraged the likes of Benteke to leave earlier in the month, and we can only hope the forward listens to this advice while his stock and potential price-tag is still high.

“It makes no sense to stay in the squad and be in the squad when you don’t have a real opportunity to play,” he told the Mirror a week back.

“When there’s no chance to play, it makes absolutely no sense.

“We have a few players, maybe, who want to leave us and I’m pretty sure that will happen. And one or two more players will join us from other clubs.

“It’s a long time until the 31st of August and we have to work a little bit.”

Benteke has just joined up with his team-mates in America following a lengthy summer break, but we’d be surprised if he’s still with us at the start of the season.
