Jon Flanagan is unlikely to play in Burnley’s first game of the season.

Flanno’s new club play Swansea at Turf Moor on the opening day, but their boss Sean Dyche appeared to suggest the full-back’s match fitness is not yet good enough for him to take part.

“We’ll see about next week, we’ll do some testing over the next few days, but he hasn’t played a lot of football so we’ll make sure he’s well enough to play rather than wondering. We’ll test him,” said Dyche (via Burnley Express, cited on Echo)

“The initial period we think he’s behind the curve fitness wise. He’s only played three 45s, so we’ll get him fit first”.

The 23-year-old would also be unavailable for the Burnley vs Liverpool game – also at Turf Moor – the following weekend. Premier League rules state that loanees cannot play against their parent clubs.

That means he might be forced to wait until The Clarets’ fixture against Chelsea on August 27th to make his debut – a date that’s almost three full weeks away.

Flanagan himself his just hopeful of getting a season of regular football under his belt:

“I’ve had a frustrating two years and got back for the second half of last season, which was good,” he said.

“My aim now is to get as many games as possible and get back to the fitness levels I had in 2013/14.”
