Klopp defends Flanagan loan move, despite left-back shortage

Posted by

Jurgen Klopp has defended his decision to allow Jon Flanagan to move to Burnley on a season-long loan.

Flanagan moved in a bid to regain form and fitness after his 2-year injury nightmare, but we are now woefully understaffed at left-back; Alberto Moreno is the only recognised specialist in the squad.

“It wasn’t a difficult decision to send Flanno on loan because it makes sense for him,” Klopp said.

“After a long injury he needs the opportunity to play. In Flanno’s case we thought it makes absolute sense that he gets the opportunity to play at the highest level with Burnley. It’s all good for all sides.” (via Echo).

James Milner can theoretically also play left-back, but a lot of fans are uneasy about our lack of cover on both sides of the defence.

“We have a lot of players who can play in our style of play at left-back. You could say ‘he’s not a left-back’ but that’s how it is.

“We saw Milly play there against Barcelona and is not bad. I had a talk to him and what’s his opinion about it,” stated Klopp. “I don’t want to force a new position on a player.

“Ragnar (Klavan) can play left-back, so we have a lot of different options.”

“We are not blind. (Maybe) not a lot of people are happy with the solution. I’m sorry for this. But we have other options.” (via Echo).

Are you happy with the cover? We not thrilled, but at the same time, it doesn’t make sense to buy a player for one season if Flanno is part of his long-term plans. Should we perhaps enter the loan market? Let us know….
