Liverpool legend claims Sadio Mane debut was the best he’s seen in 30 years

Jan Molby has claimed Sadio Mane’s debut against Arsenal was one of the best debut he’s seen from any Liverpool player since John Barnes.

Barnes made his debut in 1987 after signing from Watford – almost 30 years ago.

“Mane produced a brilliant debut against Arsenal and it reminded me of the impact John Barnes made when he signed from Watford in 1987,” said the Dane.

“Everyone was aware of Barnes but we didn’t really know just how good he was. It was the same with Mane this summer. Liverpool fans knew him from his time at Southampton and thought he was okay but many weren’t entirely convinced, especially at £30million.” (via Echo)

Mane scored a wonderful solo goal last weekend – a strike that turned out to be the match-winner.

Despite his praise, Molby claims he won’t be too concerned if the Senegalese international misses the Burnley trip with a shoulder injury. The new boy suffered the knock in training and was sent for scans during the week.

“If he misses out against Burnley we have plenty of options in that attacking area. I’d expect Klopp to drop Roberto Firmino a bit deeper and start Divock Origi,” he said.
