Leicester City make interesting beeline to sign Liverpool’s unsung former talent finder

Remember Eduardo Macia, Reds?

We can.. just about, but only by name – and had to research who and what he was at Liverpool. It turns out the Spaniard was brought to the club by Rafa Benitez and worked in the recruitment set-up, helping to sign Fernando Torres, Javier Mascherano and Raheem Sterling – all of whom left for vast profits, of course.

The Telegraph claim that now Premier League champions Leicester City have offered Macia a contract to become their head of recruitment, since Steve Walsh joined Everton in the summer.

Leicester’s title success was largely due to their phenomenal work in the transfer market, with Walsh playing a big role in securing the likes of Jamie Vardy, N’golo Kante and Riyad Mahrez, among others, but without Walsh – Macia is expected to improve their scouting network across Europe.

Claudio Ranieri worked with Macia at Valencia and the pair have remained close ever since.

Liverpool’s former transfer strategy was heavily criticised, with the infamous committee approach scrutinised for a string of failed big money deals. Now with Jurgen Klopp at the helm though, it’s much more simple. We try and buy players the German earmarks; and every new arrival is sealed with his own approval – which wasn’t the case with former boss Brendan Rodgers.

Time will tell if Klopp gets it right, although his history in the market with Borussia Dortmund suggests we’re onto a winner.
