Klopp told FSG in first meeting the 4 Liverpool players he really liked

The Liverpool correspondent for the Times, Tony Barrett, has taken an interesting career move and gone to work for Joe.co.uk – a fairly new sports company in what’s symbolic of the changing tide of sports journalism.

His debut piece aired last night, and got Liverpool fans talking aplenty, as it featured a number of claims we’ll discuss today on Empire of the Kop.

One of which is the following, on one of Klopp’s early meetings with FSG before he took over the reigns at Liverpool.

“Another element of Liverpool’s transfer activity that has been largely overlooked was how content Klopp was with a number of players who were already at his disposal.

“That came across in his earliest meetings with Liverpool’s hierarchy when he openly admitted to having taken a previous interest in the likes of Divock Origi, Emre Can, Adam Lallana and Roberto Firmino.”

It’s pretty obvious, based on everything that’s followed, that this much is true.

Klopp’s nurtured Origi, and often in fact used him ahead of Daniel Sturridge, who’s recognised as one of the most natural forwards in the country.

Can’s cemented an automatic spot in midfield, having previously been used as a utility player by Rodgers, while Lallana is one of the first names on Klopp’s team-sheet due to his ability to press from the front. Likewise, Firmino always gets in the team, often leading the line as a defensive/creative forward who’s judged more on his ability to get the ball back and bring others into the game than he is on goals.

It’s clear Klopp also likes James Milner, Dejan Lovren, Nathaniel Clyne and Coutinho – and naturally – he’ll back his new signings too… The likes of Simon Mignolet, Daniel Sturridge and maybe Alberto Moreno will need to play consistently well to get themselves back in the boss’s good books.
