Boss Michael Beale was full of praise for the young outfit, calling it a wonderful performance.

“It was an excellent performance from the lads against the Qatar national team,” he said. “We were at under-20 level and it was great to see lads get some valuable minutes under their belt.

“Joe Maguire was outstanding at left wing-back, Cameron Brannagan dominated the midfield with Matty Virtue, and Toni Gomes was in great form in attack.”

The U20s is not an official bracket in the Liverpool academy structure – with the U23s replacing the now defunct U21s.

Next up for the U18s is a league trip to ‘Boro on Saturday. The U23s go to Spurs on Monday.

The Liverpool website classed the fixture as an U23 game, meaning they have now scored ten goals in two games after beating Leicester 4-0 at the weekend.
