This tweet sums up the calibre of player Liverpool have let go since 2010.

Sky Sports correspondent Kaveh Solhekol tweeted the news today that in the six intervening years, we’ve made £378m from player sales – more than any club in world football.

During this period of time we’ve offloaded Fernando Torres for a then British record fee, Luis Suarez for mega money, Raheem Sterling for £49m and a host of stars this summer for a monumental sum. Under Jurgen Klopp this window just gone, we actually made money – thanks to the expensive departures of the likes of Christian Benteke, Jordon Ibe and Joe Allen.

In the long run though, we don’t want to be anywhere near the top of this table, for two reasons:

Firstly, we don’t want to offload our best players for big sums, we want to keep them; and secondly – we don’t want there to be ‘deadwood’ in the squad that we need rid of in the first place…

Ideally under Klopp, we’ll boost the squad with one or two key additions every summer, or youngsters with immense potential for improvement under his guidance. This way, the manager’s ethos and teachings are complemented rather than changed, with Liverpool’s squad ready to hit the ground running every season.
