Jason McAteer opens up on his remarkable journey from bartender to Liverpool star

Younger fans might only know Jason McAteer as a joker who turns up to banter with Neil Ruddock on Soccer AM every few months.

But back in his playing days he was one of the best full-backs in the league in the mid-1990s. Signed from Bolton in 1995 for £4.5 million, the Birkenhead-born Irishman quickly became a fan favourite.

He eventually left the club in 1999 and went on to play for Blackburn, Sunderland, and Tranmere before hanging up his boots in 2007.

He has just released his autobiography, and excerpts have been published on the official Liverpool FC site.

In it, he reveals how he lived the dream by going from being a bartender to playing in the World Cup to signing for the Reds, all in five crazy years.

“When it came to me signing for Liverpool in 1995, it was a dream I never thought I would fulfil, certainly when I was 20 years old and working in a pub. But three years later I’m playing in a World Cup and five years later I’m signing for Roy Evans and playing for Liverpool!

“When you put on that red shirt for the first time it’s difficult to describe the feeling; words can’t do justice to how good it is.

“It’s like you are a superhero and you are putting on this magical cape. When you are in that dressing room and you put the red shirt on for the first time the emotion that runs through you and the adrenaline is just incredible.”

He eventually played 139 times for Liverpool and scored 6 goals for us.

He never won a trophy, but picked up a runners-up medal in the 1996 FA Cup Final.
