Three-time European Cup winner explains why Klopp’s setup is so dangerous

With 18 goals scored in the league and 26 scored in all competitions, we have enjoyed our best goal-scoring start to a season in more than 100 years.

And three-time European Cup winner David Fairclough has been offering his own personal perspective on why we are so formidable going forward.

“Players like Lallana, Mane, Coutinho, Firmino – they all look very, very comfortable with each other, and you’re getting support from the more defensive players. There’s an enjoyment, I think, in going forward.

“Mane, for example, starts in wide positions, but how often does he finish in the centre of the goal? That’s great to see, it confuses the opposition.

“Defenders like to have players up against them, they like to have them close so they can assess their movement, but the way Liverpool are playing at the moment it’s very difficult to track the runs of everyone. The movement has been exceptional.”

Fairclough certainly knows what it takes to score goals and win trophies. He lifted Europe’s premier prize in 1977, 1978, and 1981, as well as picking up six league titles and three League Cups.

He eventually played 98 league games for the club between 1975 and 1983, and scored 34 goals.

After leaving he went on to play for Luzern, Norwich, Oldham, Tranmere, and Wigan before eventually hanging up his boots in 1991.
