Neil Mellor says only one crucial factor can damage Liverpool’s chances of beating Manchester United

Former Reds striker Neil Mellor has claimed that only the repercussions of the international break are stopping him from confidently backing Liverpool to beat Manchester United on Monday night.

Mellor touched on a potential loss in momentum to Liverpool’s explosive form after a fortnight of World Cup qualifying matches restricted the squad from training together regularly.

In an article for the Liverpool Echo, he said: “If this game was before the international break I’d have fancied Liverpool beating Manchester United no problem.”

“But the international break disrupted a real feel-good factor at Liverpool, as were finding ways to win games and were absolutely flying.”

“We didn’t need the break but it came round and low and behold there’s injury doubts now going into a huge game, which is disappointing.”

Liverpool enter their crucial Premier League match-up against Manchester United with uncertainty over the fitness of midfielders Adam Lallana and Georginio Wijnaldum after recent knocks.

If there’s anything we have shown this year though, it’s that we have a strong squad and players that are capable of coming in and doing a good job.

A game against United is perhaps not a bad one for someone to make a rare start given the instant motivation that should be generated by a footballing rivalry of this calibre.

Jurgen Klopp will not stand for any half-hearted approaches to such a big contest and will undoubtedly be doing his very best on the training ground to make sure nothing has changed about the positive mood amongst squad.
