Clyne lauds new signing, describes how he feels playing alongside him

In the opening games of the season, all the praise for the summer signings was directed towards Gini Wijnaldum and Sadio Mane.

There was certainly nothing wrong with that, both players combined to give us a whole new dimension to our attacking line-up.

But as the season has gone on, more and more praise has been given to Joel Matip. The centre back joined us on a free transfer from Schalke over the summer and has quickly established a fine partnership with Dejan Lovren in the heart of the back four.

The latest to sing his praises in right-back Nathaniel Clyne. He says he loves playing alongside him and he’s been impressed with the Cameroonian’s performances.

“He’s confident on the ball, you see him driving forward from defence and helping to set up attacks. He’s good and I like playing with him,” said Clyne (Echo)

“He is not fazed by anything. He is putting in good performances and long may they continue.”

Matip missed the first couple of games of the season with an injury, but since making his league debut in the 1-1 draw with Spurs he has been an ever-present in the first XI. He’s also played in both League Cup games.
