What happened with Coutinho & Firmino when Brazil pulverised Argentina last night…

Brazil thrashed their fiercest rivals Argentina 3-0 last night, with Coutinho at the centre of most things good they did.

Our playmaker, who usually starts on the left of a front-three, started on the right of an offensive trio which included Neymar in his favoured left-wing role and Gabriel Jesus in the middle.

After 25 minutes though, Coutinho found himself on his favoured left flank having temporarily switched roles. From here, he cut in on his right, beat two defenders and curled the ball into the top corner to give Brazil a deserved lead.

This will undoubtedly give manager Tite something to think about!

Neymar added a second in first-half injury time, before former Tottenham flop Paulinho finished the game on the hour mark.

Lionel Messi couldn’t get into the game and the Argentina defence, which deployed the likes of reserve United stopper Sergio Romero and Everton defender Ramiro Funes Mori, was shaky throughout.

Coutinho retained possession and displayed his technical skills, although he couldn’t properly impose himself on proceedings following the goal because of his role on the right. Still, he’d done his job and will start against Peru next week. Thankfully he didn’t pick up any sign of an injury.

Brazil now top the South American Qualification group, while Argentina are struggling. Any more losses and there’s a real danger they (and Messi) won’t qualify for Russia.

Firmino came off the bench with eight minutes to go in place of Gabriel Jesus, the wonderkid who’s set to join up up with his new team Manchester City in January. At the moment, Jesus has the spot at the pinnacle of Brazil’s attack and our no.11 is his understudy. The Liverpool man didn’t put a foot wrong and displayed some nice touches, although in truth he didn’t have an opportunity to properly impress.
