How a sleeping Liverpool legend missed the chance to lure young England star to the club

Often we see Dele Alli and can’t help but feel we let a potentially great player slip from our hands. Then we look and see the likes of Philippe Coutinho, Roberto Firmino, Sadio Mane, Adam Lallana and Daniel Sturridge and realise that we are more than fine without him.

Like him or not, Alli has been superb since breaking into the Tottenham first team last season. It could have been a whole lot different for him though had Liverpool succeeded in trying to sign him in 2014.

The former MK Dons midfielder has explained how the club’s main ploy to try and lure him to Merseyside didn’t really work out.

He told Football Focus via the Liverpool Echo: “At the time when I was at MK there was contact with Liverpool before I signed for Tottenham, but that was before we’d even spoke to Tottenham. I think it was six months before.”

“We went up there and I think they knew that Steven Gerrard was my hero, so they said he was going to come down to meet me, but when I got there he was asleep apparently.”

“I think he had a game the next day though so I understand.”

We’ll let Stevie off, especially considering how big a role he played in helping to keep Luis Suarez at the club for as long as he did.

Besides, we might never have signed Firmino or Mane had Alli joined the club he supported as a young boy.
