Jose Fonte is one of the most underrated centre-backs in the Premier League.
The Portuguese veteran made his way through the leagues, but is now a regular international and considered as a mainstay of one of the country’s best backlines at Southampton.
He made his name alongside Dejan Lovren at Southampton, and while the Croat signed for us in 2014, Fonte’s stayed on the south coast, where he now partners Virgil Van Dijk.

But a post from our defender on Instagram last night has led fans to suggest Fonte, who’s contract runs out at the end of the season, might be joining Lovren on Merseyside.
Fonte congratulated his former partner on our 1-0 win over Everton, before Lovren replied: ‘Thanks bro. Hope to see you soon. You know where ?…’

This could be code for literally anything, but it’s certainly got Liverpool fans talking nonetheless.
We’d pay slightly more attention to this if Jurgen Klopp didn’t have such a number of centre-backs already at his disposal. Joel Matip, Lovren, Ragnar Klavan, Lucas and Joe Gomez are competition enough and it’s an attacker we’re more likely to purchase come the January window.
