Former Liverpool defender heaps praise on ‘one of the best talents around’

Joe Gomez isn’t bad, is he? In fact, we think he’s brilliant.

He is so good that we wouldn’t be surprised to see him break into Jurgen Klopp’s starting lineup before the Premier League season ends. To keep a 19-year-old with his talent on the bench for the remainder of the campaign means our current central defenders would have to be playing incredibly well.

It is still early days but the young defender has the potential to become a regular starter under Klopp with tomorrow’s FA Cup third round tie representing his first opportunity to remind everyone of what he can do.

The former Charlton man still has a long way to go having been out of action for so long but we are confident he can begin to rediscover his form between now and May.

Ex-Reds defender Phil Babb has high hopes for Gomez and believes his talent reinforces the idea that Liverpool’s defensive depth isn’t as worrying as people think.

He told Liverpoolfc.com: “Physically he is really strong, he is unflustered on the ball and is quite creative for a defensive player.”

“When I read lots of rumours about the manager supposedly wanting another centre-half…[well] we already have one of the best talents around in our ranks and that is Joe Gomez.”

“We can trust Dejan Lovren, Joel Matip and Ragnar Klavan at centre-half. We can also add Joe to that and Lucas Leiva, who always does a great job. I don’t think we are too bad at all when it comes to the centre-halves we have available.”

“Joe has got all the attributes and he is a fantastic athlete.”

Gomez is yet to feature under Klopp since he was appointed as manager but very clearly has the backing of the German.

He is under the right man to oversee his return from a gruelling 16 month layoff and the right man to help him develop into a solid Premier League centre-back.
