Liverpool are refusing to put a clause in Coutinho’s new contract

Liverpool want to avoid the chance of a potential suitor forcing Coutinho out of the club, writes Paul Joyce in the Times.

To do so, we’ll refuse to insert a release clause into his proposed new contract.

The Brazilian no.10 was awarded a five year extension in February 2015, but two years later the club want to reward his monumental improvement again with better terms – which will likely make him Liverpool’s highest paid player.

Coutinho has six goals in all competitions this season, but his campaign has been stunted by the foot injury he picked up against Sunderland at the back end of 2016. He’s not found his best form again since his return, which has unfortunately coincided with Sadio Mane’s AFCON absence and our worst run of form this term.

Hopefully, Coutinho and his team-mates can step up again – quickly.
