Joel Matip with fighting talk as he hails the importance of Chelsea display

Last night’s performance was exactly what was required from Jurgen Klopp’s men after the January they have endured.

As good as a victory would have been, a draw is a valuable reminder that there is still a lot of work to be done for this team to reach the standards that it set during the opening months of the season.

A draw against the Premier League leaders having initially gone behind will give the players a confidence boost but also something to fight for knowing full well that one game doesn’t mark a complete turn around in fortune.

Joel Matip has hailed his side’s display and described how he is only looking ahead from this point on.

“It’s not been easy but we have to keep going because we cannot change the past. We have to do everything we can do to change things in the future,” he told the Liverpool Echo.

“Every player needs a positive experience or to get positive things in a game to get self-confident. I think this was a good step to get some of this self-confidence back and we are looking forward to playing against Hull on Saturday. We are in a good way.”

Saturday’s trip to Hull is yet another ideal test at a tough stage of the season with the Premier League’s bottom club undoubtedly set to give the Reds a difficult game as they fight to survive.

Beating the supposedly ‘lesser clubs’ has been Liverpool’s problem and playing a side at the other end of the table to Chelsea will be an interesting demonstration of our attitude and approach.

One bad month doesn’t have to define our season and with no cup competitions to play in we can now focus entirely on earning a place in the top four.
