Matip promises Liverpool fans the players are gutted by current form & agree with Klopp’s analysis

Liverpool missed Joel Matip very much when he was out of the side, first through injury and then through FIFA’s red-tape, but in fairness, he’s not shone since returning to the XI.

None of his team-mates have either though, with our shocking run since January 1st very well publicised.

We’ve gone from fighting for two cups and the title to being out of the EFL Cup, FA Cup and sitting fifth place in the league.

Following the defeat to Hull City on Saturday, Jurgen Klopp tore into his players in the dressing room before publicly accepting that the current levels of performance have been way below what’s deemed acceptable.

The Cameroonian centre-half has assured supporters the team feels the same.

Matip told the club’s official website: “We [will] try to get back to that level. We will do everything to get back to that level and play the football we played.

“It was not a good day for us, of course, but next week is the next chance. We’ll try to do better and get some points.

“Of course it’s disappointing. We tried to win but it was not enough.

“We have to work harder. The first half was not good. The second half was a little bit better, but not good enough. We have to start earlier. We’ve all said it, not only the manager.”

Now, Klopp, Matip and the squad have a full week to prepare for the Spurs game on Saturday. We’ve played so much better against ‘good’ sides this season, so were actually more worried about the Leicester and Burnley fixtures than we are about Tottenham and Arsenal’s February visits to Anfield!

We desperately need three points this coming weekend though, as we’ve yet to register a Premier League win in 2017. A defeat and we’ll likely fall to sixth position in the table – unthinkable around Christmas time when we were second favourites for the title.
