Ten years on from Barcelona 1-2 Liverpool, where are the XI Reds who started that night now?

It’s ten years ago to the day that Liverpool recorded one of our most famous away victories in Europe, beating reigning Champions League holders Barcelona 2-1 at Camp Nou.

Craig Bellamy and John Arne Riise scored the goals, just days after a bust-up which involved the former swinging for the latter with a golf club!

Here’s where the XI players who started that night are now…

Pepe Reina: Keeps goal for Napoli after leaving Liverpool in 2013. At his best, he was one of the world’s top stoppers, but is still arguably an improvement on what we have now.

Steve Finnan: Retired in 2010, just two years after leaving Liverpool for Espanyol. Has left the game completely and in 2015, there was a ‘search for Finnan’ ahead of the ten year anniversary of our Champions League win. He was found safe and well!

Alvaro Arbeloa: Left Liverpool in 2010 for peanuts to join Real Madrid, for whom he became a regular fullback and a trusted versatility player. Now back in the Premier League with West Ham.

Jamie Carragher: One of the game’s top pundits, currently working for Sky Sports. Retired in 2012 and as of yet, has no plans to get into management.

Daniel Agger: Left Liverpool in 2014 to rejoin boyhood club Brondby. Sadly retired last year aged just 31, with injuries making it simply too painful for him to keep stepping out onto a football pitch.

Steven Gerrard: After leaving Liverpool for LA Galaxy in 2015, Gerrard retired last year and quickly rejoined Liverpool as a youth coach. One day, he’ll take Jurgen Klopp’s job and is rightly regarded as our greatest ever midfielder.

Momo Sissoko: Left Liverpool in 2008, when it became apparent he’d never be the same footballer following his eye injury. Went on to play in China and India, but now turns out for Serie B club Ternana. Remarkably, he’s still only 32!

Xabi Alonso: Has become a real legend of the game, winning Champions Leagues with Real Madrid and Bundesliga titles with Bayern Munich since leaving in 2009. Letting him go eight years ago has proven a travesty, but the Spaniard is retiring at the end of this season.

John Arne Riise: The Norwegian left-back with the most powerful shot in football last played for IPL side Chennaiyin on a two month contract, and although he isn’t officially retired, hasn’t been attached to a club since October. Riise left Liverpool in 2008, enjoying successful spells at Roma and Fulham among others.

Craig Bellamy: Left Liverpool in 2007, but returned in 2011 for one more season, in which he won the League Cup with us. Joined Cardiff in 2012 and retired two years later.

Dirk Kuyt: Aged 36, Kuyt is still going strong, proving we maybe let him go too early. The Dutchman plundered 23 goals for Feyenoord last term, and has reached double figures in every season since he left us for Fenerbahce in 2012!
