Wijnaldum nails it with wise approach to fierce top four battle

Liverpool are set to embark on a season-defining period which the players must approach with the right mentality.

It will be tough and it will be frustrating at times but that’s the Premier League. A breathtaking display against Tottenham, as good as it was, doesn’t certify a strong run of games or the team performing consistently well between now and May.

That isn’t to say we shouldn’t be optimistic or confident, though. This squad has the talent to secure a Champions League place and proved that at the beginning of the campaign.

Midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum has highlighted the level of competition at the top of the table and has expressed the importance of remaining level-headed and focusing on one week at a time.

“We are in a competition where there are five, six, seven teams who can finish in the first four,” he told Sky Sports.

“You have to look at it game by game, and do it step by step, and the in the end you will see where you are standing.”

“I think if you think that far ahead about the first four, or to be champions, that is something you cannot control. You can control the training and then the performance will come game by game, and do not think that far ahead.”

£25million man- this must happen next in order to recover from disappointing January

One game at a time was the motto during the early stages of the season and that’s exactly what it must be now.

We’d like to think it can’t get any worse than what it was like in January and that the opportunity is there for the players to make amends and finish strongly.
