Klavan’s selfless comments sum up Liverpool’s underrated centre-back

The jury is still largely out on Ragnar Klavan…

Barely anyone had heard of him when he arrived from Augsburg in the summer, but Jurgen Klopp was adamant he’d be an excellent acquisition and we’ve learnt to take the manager’s word.

The 31-year-old has put in some strong defensive performances, but also some that begged questions.

That, combined with his age, and the fact we’ve let in 36 Premier League goals this term, means few supporters consider him a long-term option for us at centre-back.

But from now until the end of the season, we think Klavan will continue to have an important part to play.

He’s currently with Estonia on international duty, where his country’s all-time appearance record is not too far away…

Klavan’s on 117, and would have to play for the next three or years years to overtake Martin Reim – who’s on 157!

But the defender doesn’t want the record and actually hopes some young defenders usurp him, for the benefit of the national side.

What a guy!

Klavan told Premier League Productions (cited by the official website): “In a perfect world, no, because I’m hoping that in our national team – I’m 31 now – there will come a time that they’ll push me out, that I’m going to get in the way.

“Hopefully the younger players will see this as extra motivation to kick me out!”
