Adam Lallana set to be announced England captain

Gareth Southgate wants to continue rotating the England captaincy and is expected to award it to Adam Lallana for Sunday’s wembley qualifier against Lithuania, with the Liverpool playmaker impressing the manager enormously since he took full-time charge.

This is based on a report in the Times, which suggests while Joe Hart and Chris Smalling are also candidates, Lallana is the favourite, because Gary Cahill is unavailable due to suspension.

Southgate’s already given Jordan Henderson the skipper’s armband once, but with our midfielder out, and Wayne Rooney and Cahill not around, Lallana is next in line…

It’s a huge compliment for a player who was inexplicably dropped for the Iceland defeat in the summer, despite being England’s best players at the Euros.

Southgate understands his qualities more than Roy Hodgson and along with Dele Alli, Lallana is England’s most influential figure now.

Let’s just hope he puts in another good performance for his country, but returns to Melwood fit and healthy. It’s the Merseyside Derby next weekend… Far more important!
