183-goal Anfield great on why Legends match was such a momentous occasion

Fans travelled from far and wide on Saturday to watch some of Liverpool’s greatest players grace the Anfield turf once again.

Those who travel from other countries or other areas of England to watch the Reds are often criticised for diminishing the local feel yet the mix of people in the crowd proved to be a refreshing reminder of how prestigious and how famous this club is.

Many young children for the first time came to watch the heroes their Mum and Dad would teach them about while the parents were given a chance to watch those they grew up admiring.

Reds from around the world were treated to an opportunity to see players who produced some of the most famous moments in footballing history.

It seemed that the players, too, were grateful of such an occasion with legendary striker Robbie Fowler delighted to have played and scored at Liverpool’s home again.

“We don’t get that chance very often now, it does get harder for us. We love it and hopefully an occasion like this will happen again but hopefully it will. We’ve all enjoyed it and if it does happen again there are going to be a lot more players putting their hands up wanting to join in,” he told the Liverpool Echo.

“54,000 people here, people who’ve probably never seen Liverpool play getting the chance to come here. The Foundation obviously did the tickets a little bit cheaper and I think everyone’s had a great day, including all the players.”

“I think the fans will walk away absolutely delighted. They’ve got into Anfield to see some absolute legends on show, these two guys (Rush and John Aldridge), Steven, Carra, Steve McManaman, all players who are synonymous with winning stuff at this great club.”

“Me personally I obviously live on goals and any chance you get to play at Anfield is special. Any chance you get to do it with a Liverpool shirt on is even sweeter.”
