Liverpool’s 23-year-old central midfielder will be sold this summer (The Times)

This is hardly surprising, but it appears Kevin Stewart will leave Liverpool this summer, having only received a handful of minutes this season.

The Englishman initially impressed Jurgen Klopp when the German took over, but he’s played less this term than last and despite signing a contract extension which could theoretically keep him at Anfield until 2021 (gulp…), the Times claim that both player and the club agree that a split is necessary.

Stewart is a humble midfielder who does offer lots defensively, but at 23, it’s abundantly clear he needs to be playing regular football, having made a handful of professional starts his entire career.

Emre Can is four months his junior and has 200-odd career appearances and eight caps for Germany, to put Stewart’s situation in perspective.

Because of Stewart’s age, nationality and the education he’s received at Melwood, there’ll likely be suitors in the bottom half of the Premier League or perhaps at the top half of the Championship.

Newcastle were interested back in January and it would be nice to see him develop under Rafa Benitez, a manager who would undoubtedly appreciate Stewart’s steeliness.
