Why Emre Can isn’t extending LFC contract (not because of money…)

Emre Can’s contract expires in 2018 and so far, Liverpool have not been able to reach an agreement with the 23-year-old midfielder.

He’s after £100k/week, but the stickling point in negotiations is reportedly because Can wants assurances that he’ll be used as a holding midfielder long-term.

The Guardian suggest Can has blamed his calf injury on the number of sprints he has to do in the box-to-box role and wants Jurgen Klopp to play him in his favoured position to help his form and protect his body!

In January, Can was very poor during our bad run and became a figure of blame for many supporters. In the past few months though he’s improved dramatically and over the past five matches has probably been our best midfielder.

We’d love him to extend, but with Jordan Henderson, our captain, developing as a deep-lying playmaker, the holding spot isn’t automatically Can’s.

Henderson’s often injured of course and Can offers more physical presence, so we’d be more than happy to see the two fight it out next season.

It’s strength and depth of competition that will be important if we’re hopefully in the Champions League next term.
