Klopp jokes over £400million clause in Coutinho’s contract and plays down Barcelona rumours

Jurgen Klopp has responded to undying rumours linking Philippe Coutinho to a move to Barcelona by reaffirming the idea that the Liverpool man is going absolutely nowhere.

The Brazilian committed his future to the club in January by signing a new long-term deal yet has seen reports continue to link him to a union with compatriot and close friend Neymar at the Camp Nou. Klopp opted for a notable sarcastic tone to reiterate the club’s desire to keep hold of the forward.

“When did he sign his new contract? So that would be a nice idea. With a £400million clause! There are absolutely no plans. What our owners say is there is the absolute opportunity not to sell anybody if we do not want to. That means we can bring in others players and it is a good situation,” he told the Liverpool Echo.

“We have a stable squad with a good basis. We want to bring a few in with fresh blood, but nobody will leave us without our say so I am completely relaxed about this.”

Coutinho himself reminded Reds of his dedication to Liverpool earlier this week when he expressed his wish to deliver silverware and replicate the achievements of club legends during his time on Merseyside.

His emphatic start to the Premier League campaign threatened to draw interest from Europe’s elite sides as he emerged as arguably the standout performer in England’s top flight at one point. An injury before the turn of the year, however, disrupted his progress and saw him look far from his best when he did eventually return to fitness.

He, admittedly, has plenty he can improve on and remains a full dominant season away from posing as a serious target for Barcelona to pursue. Liverpool is the ideal environment for him right now as a player who needs to be featuring regularly and establishing himself as the main man.

Rumours linking him to a move to Spain have refused to disappear but for the next year at least, it looks as though he will remain a Red.
