Liverpool reportedly set to compete for Bundesliga left-back

Liverpool are believed to be eyeing up Ricardo Rodriguez as they continue their search for a long-term replacement for James Milner at left-back.

New links to yet another full-back seem difficult to believe following reports suggesting Hull City’s Andrew Robertson will be announced as Liverpool’s first signing when the transfer window opens.

Rumours talking up a move for Rodriguez are admittedly loose at this stage but can by no means be overlooked given how regularly the Switzerland international has reportedly been close to a move to the Premier League in the past.

The Reds are facing competition from AC Milan for the 24-year-old with both clubs having sent scouts to watch the Wolfsburg defender and made initial contact, according to the Mirror.

£18.5million has been identified as the fee required to lure Rodriguez from the Bundesliga club and will potentially put Liverpool off given how much cheaper Robertson is expected to be, who would arrive with added bonus of experience in England’s top flight.

It is becoming increasingly likely that a new first choice left-back will be recruited in order to allow Milner to move back into his preferred midfield role. The possible introduction of Robertson and interest in Rodriguez means it remains to be seen whether Liverpool will follow up their interest in Fulham teenager Ryan Sessegnon, who had been pinpointed as a key target for Klopp.
