Klopp with admission about Liverpool’s targets at the start of the season

A top four finish is undoubtedly something Liverpool fans and Jurgen Klopp himself would be thrilled to achieve yet doing so didn’t pose as the manager’s initial targets at the beginning of the season.

Part of the German will have certainly considered Champions League qualification as a priority but not so that it would stop him from striving to achieve even more.

Admitting that he wouldn’t have been satisfied with accepting simply a top four spot at the start of the season, Klopp told the Liverpool Echo: “It would be a nice answer to say yes but it’s really not the truth because at the beginning of seasons I don’t set myself limits and say ‘this would be okay’.”

“My personality is like this. I always dream of the biggest things and of course in one or two moments of the season I am as disappointed as a fan, but that doesn’t mean I can’t keep this and be not successful.”

“Now, this is our target and this is what we go for, and we have the opportunity and this is what we should use. “They were always focused. Yes, I think they really deserve it.”

It has been Liverpool’s emphatic start to the campaign that has primarily fuelled frustration over a mixed 2017 and a dramatic dip in form following the turn of the year. That said, such strong performances in the early months of the season have hinted at an imminent title challenge, providing the club enjoys a successful transfer window.

Klopp’s wish to aim for the very top is something that bodes well in terms of demanding continued progression until Liverpool are once again competing consistently with the best teams in the division.

Top four will be a great achievement considering the circumstances, but let’s hope it isn’t too long before this team is capable of even more.
