Anfield legend Robbie Fowler has tipped Ben Woodburn to kick on from his breakthrough season at Liverpool in which he became the club’s youngest ever goalscorer.

Woodburn was one of many Reds youngsters to make a name for himself courtesy of numerous first team opportunities handed out by Jurgen Klopp.

The Welshman’s sparkling form for the U23s was rightly rewarded by the Liverpool manager with fans now excited to see what role the forward will play when the new campaign gets underway in August.

Fowler has hailed the work of the club to grant Woodburn his chance on the big stage and believes a bright future awaits for the 17-year-old.

He told Liverpoolfc.com: “Jürgen Klopp has been fantastic with him. He has had him on the periphery of the first team a good few times.”

“I was there when he made his debut and getting that goal was brilliant for the lad. He probably deserves to be in and around the team because of his performances for the youth teams.”

“But it doesn’t stop there. He knows that he’s got a lot of hard work to do. And under the tuition of Jürgen and a few of the older boys in the team, he’ll be getting advice every day off Jordan Henderson, who is the captain, and all of Jürgen’s staff as well.”

“They’re the ones with him as many hours of the day as possible. The lad is a good player. He is definitely going the right way. He definitely is one to watch out for in the next season or two.”

The teenager looked a class above his opponents in Liverpool’s second-string side last season and could well find himself in the first team squad more regularly in 2017/2018 given the club’s busy schedule.

Klopp’s desire to protect the youngster from unhelpful hype somewhat recognises how highly he values him as well as how important the Reds boss is in helping the club’s starlets develop.

Pre-season will be another ideal opportunity to see Woodburn in action alongside regular starters.
