Bullish Karius rejects Bundesliga move; Desperate for LFC no.1 role

Loris Karius is determined to make a success of his Liverpool career, despite a poor debut season.

The German arrived from Mainz last summer, but broke his hand during pre-season, which set the tone for a stop/start campaign.

When Jurgen Klopp gave him a chance ahead of Simon Mignolet, Karius struggled – eventually losing his place to the Belgian following a string of mistakes.

The 23-year-old was back on the bench before Christmas, and only used in January’s eventually failed cup competitions.

Making matters worse, Mignolet began to shine in 2017 and is now regarded as a staple of Klopp’s first-team.

But despite interest from Bundesliga clubs, Karius wants to stay at Anfield and earn his spot.

“There is absolutely nothing to the rumours that Karius will leave,” his agent Florian Goll told Goal.

“He did not sign at Liverpool for the short term – he believes in the vision of the manager and he wants to be fully fit and prepared to fight for the No.1 position from the first day back.

“He has already started his individual programme to keep fit during the summer, because he wants to be completely ready when pre-season starts.

“He is extremely motivated by the competition.”

Karius’s attitude is admirable, as when a no.1 keeper is doing well, there’s very little his backup can do to impress.

Hopefully, the younger man will get plenty of chances during this summer’s friendlies, and impress during the League Cup fixtures, too.

That’s assuming Klopp keeps faith with Mignolet until the Belgian gives him a reason to change his mind…
