Napoli have £11million bid rejected for Alberto Moreno – fresh offers inbound

The bidding for Alberto Moreno is seemingly underway with a number of clubs across Europe targeting the out-of-favour Liverpool left-back.

An £11million offer from Napoli for the defender has been rejected by the Reds with the club holding out for £15million, according to the Telegraph’s Chris Bascombe.

The 24-year-old has previously been subject to interest from both Inter Milan and AC Milan as well as former employers Sevilla, who are weighing up a move to bring him back to Spain, and Atletico Madrid, who had a loan move for Moreno rebuffed last January.

Moreno lost his place in Jurgen Klopp’s starting lineup towards the beginning of last season after a run of nervy performances that exposed his defensive frailties.

This saw James Milner initially step in as a make-shift left-back before proving to be a solid and reliable option and thereby consolidating his place in Liverpool’s back four.

With Moreno no longer being part of Klopp’s long-term plans, recruiting a new replacement full-back has been outlined as a priority during the summer transfer window. That said, it remains to be seen whether this means signing an immediate first choice or an understudy to Milner.

Fulham’s Ryan Sessegnon had been tipped as the latter, before talks of a deal died down, while Hull City’s Andrew Robertson had also been identified as a key target, only for nothing to materialise.

The in-demand Monaco star Benjamin Mendy has also emerged as a high-profile target, although any hopes of luring him to Anfield seem futile with Manchester City reportedly closing in on Frenchman.

It appears selling Moreno could well come before Liverpool find someone to step up in for him.

A difficult career on Merseyside shouldn’t deter fans from respecting Moreno’s undeniable qualities. It’s a real shame it didn’t work out for him after arriving with so much promise.
